The second ADIT-98 conference, "Museums and the Information Space: The Problem of Informatization and Cultural Heritage," was held in Ivanovo. A key topic of the conference was the discussion of national policy in museum IT and the participation of Russian museums in European projects. A new form of communication with the general public was tested for the first time in Ivanovo: the Museum Computer Festival, in which 10 museums participated, presenting their electronic publications on CD-ROM and websites to the general public.
The conference analyzed:
- national policy in the field of museum IT (reports on key national policy areas);
- regional issues in museum IT (reports by regional representatives);
- international experience in museum IT (reports by representatives of UNESCO and the European Commission);
The conference first announced the need to create a Russian cultural heritage network. At that time, the network was understood primarily as an instrumental means of communication. But it was in Ivanovo that the strategies for the development of museums in the field of information technology and the main principles of interaction between the subjects of information activity were defined.
